Red Newt Cellars Eat Local Drink Local

Riesling is one of the most expressive wines, both of site and vintage.  The Finger Lake presents the perfect conditions to grow Riesling with personality and poise.

Riesling is also one of the most versatile wines to enjoy with Sawmill Creek Rieslingfood.  With focused flavors and acidity, Riesling flavors come to life with a wide variety of cuisines.

The Red Newt Cellars "Experience Tasting" is the perfect place to truely experience Riesling.  Offered as a seated tasting, with a small intimate group, you'll have the opportunity to taste six Red Newt Riesling wines from distinct vineyards and vintages.

Finger Lakes cuisine will also be part of the mix with small plates of fresh and local foods carefully selected to complement the wine and bring the Rieslings' gregarious personality to life.

Aprill 2011 Riesling Experience Tasting lineup:

2003 Red Newt Cellars ~ Reserve Riesling  WS 87 points

Crisp, with good cut to the lime, yellow apple and fennel notes. There's an almost bracing finish, thanks to mouthwatering acidity. A bit lean in style, but solid.--Finger Lakes retrospective (2009).  200 cases made. –JM

2006 Red Newt Cellars ~ Reserve Riesling  WS 88 points

Good pippin apple and lime notes are backed by a moderate slate note on the taut finish. Has good length and focus, though this is still a touch tight for now. 200 cases made. –JM

2007 Red Newt Cellars ~ Reserve Riesling  WS 88 points

Nice and nervy, especially for the vintage, with slate and pippin apple notes that show nice cut on the finish. 320 cases made. –JM

2009 Sawmill Creek Vineyards Riesling WS 90 points
Very fresh, with a floral edge to the flavors of lime and jasmine, which turn to snappy green apple on the refreshing, focused finish. There's really good cut to this white. Drink now through 2012. 198 cases made. –JM

2009 Lahoma Vineyards Riesling - WS 89 points
Off-dry, but focused and pure, with delicious apple, lime and kiwifruit flavors backed by a long, fresh finish. Should stretch out a touch more with brief cellaring. Drink now through 2012. 123 cases made. –JM

2009 Davis Vineyards Riesling - not yet rated
This Riesling is off-dry and complex with aromas of peach and quince in the nose, and flavors of apricot and tangerine on the palate. The palate is smooth, focused and voluptuous, leading to a crisp, dry and ethereal finish. -DW winemaker notes.

Red Newt Cellars Winery & Bistro is located just outside the bucolic hamlet of Hector in Finger Lakes wine region of NY.

The winery crafts elegant Finger Lakes wines with an emphasis on Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris.  Also part of the lineup are Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Bistro boasts an all-Finger Lakes wine list that offers well over 200 selections from top producers in the region, and has been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

In regions where the culture of wine and food spans centuries, the interplay of wine and food forms a complex and elegant dance.· In the Finger Lakes, this interplay of wine and food is just now emerging. The most exciting element of what we can hope achieve in this evolution is to express and influence the development of wines and of cuisine—together.
